NEWSLETTER for JANUARY 2010
Cincinnati Oldies & DooWop
Association
Fax: 513-474-0054 www.doowopoldies.org

Happy New Year! 2009 was a banner year for CODA – I believe it was CODA’s best year, ever. I hope 2010 will be even better.
During 2009 CODA offered a whole range of activities and entertainment. Two fine picnics and two great dances provided wonderful fun. And, who could forget three fantastic shows held during the year? These are just some of the benefits of membership in the Cincinnati Oldies and Doo Wop Association.
We were entertained by Jimmy Beaumont and The Skyliners, The Crystals, and The Marcels. We also remember performances by William
Dell and Wee Jams; Dirty Rice; The Undertones; The
Notations; The Regencys; and, The CODA
Band. The year was
rounded out with “Coda Appreciation Night” thanks to Jim and Jack’s
on the River.
This year’s election of officers and board members will be conducted in February. I encourage all interested members to run for office. Please remember, though, that these positions require work, time, and dedication, and offer high wages ($0.00 of course). These personal efforts, plus membership support, make CODA one of America’s premier “Oldies” organizations.
I hope to see each of you at the January social.
From your secretary:
It is the beginning of a new year for CODA and we are already making plans for entertainment and enjoyment for our members. We hope to have more participation from our members, their friends and families, as it does help us to provide the activities that are free to our members. The dues are very important
in the operation of the club, but without support, participation and the volunteers we would not have had the great year we did in 2009. Please keep this in mind when you make a nomination for new officers.
If you attended any of our events this past year and you have pictures, get them to me and we will post as many as we can on our web site. Thanks to Jack O’Keefe, he is one that takes pictures every time he attends and they will be on our site to view. So if you have them and want them posted…

Do you know
how they got their name?
According to original Crystals member Dee Dee Kennibrew, The Crystals were named after the daughter of Leroy Bates, the co-writer of their first hit "There's No Other Like My Baby".

MEET CHUCK
ZIMMERMAN…the colorful one of the CODA Band
Chuck was born in 1952 in Over the Rhine area of Cincinnati, on Straight Street, and attended Shield School in Clifton until he was 8 years old. In 1959 his family moved to Florence, Ky. And he has lived across th river ever since.
He graduated from Boone Co. H. S. and just celebrated his 40th class reunion in 2009. He attended University of Kentucky on a golf scholarship where he eventually settled in, majoring in psychology. After college he could be found in the Clifton area-playing trumpet for many local groups like Borrowed Tyme and the Sergeon Brass. He also played a lot of softball through the 70’s and til the mid 80’s for the city’s best teams, including the Cincinnati Suds.
Chuck has 2 children, Chad who lives in Union, Ky. And Kelly who lives in Florence, Ky. He has 3 grandchildren, Kelsey-16, the basketball player, Jordan-14, the drummer and keyboard player and Joey- 9 that’s still checking out his options.
Chuck has sung with several different groups over the years from southern gospel to doowop. He enjoys all aspects of music from the 50’s to disco to country and has really enjoyed doing a tribute to Bootsie Collins this year. Getting to know so many people in CODA has been the highlight of his membership. Not only is there fine music, but fine people… Chuck Zimmerman
On a sad note… We lost club member Bill Pickens this month to an illness he has battled for several years. He and his wife Jean have been members since 2007. He will be missed and our prayers go out to his family.
Also, the mother of Connie Fritz passed this month. Connie and her husband, Dickie, were members in 2002 and rejoined in 2009. Keep them in your prayers.
Donna Telinda, wife of Dan Telinda, and sister of Harold Wethington, (all club members) has been in the hospital most of this month fighting an infection in her blood system. She is doing well. And a little prayer doesn’t hurt. Thank you…
