JUNE 2010 NEWSLETTER
Cincinnati Oldies & DooWop Association

Summer is here and that of course means plenty of
“Oldies” activities for CODA members. June, of
course, is the month for our summer picnic. This time it will
be held at Fernbank
Park, just off River Road in the Saylor Park section of Cincinnati. Be sure
to join your fellow club members for plenty of food, fun, and beverages. The CODA Band will provide plenty of live music. I hope to
see you all on Sunday, June 13th, 2010.
Another fun-filled event will occur on July 24th. A great oldies show, featuring The Shades of Blue and The Vogues, will be
held at “Jim & Jack’s on the
River” that Saturday night. Good seats are still available, so be sure to
contact Jim & Jack’s for reservations. The admission price of $25.00 is
certainly reasonable to see two nationally known “oldies” groups. If you
enjoyed songs such as “Oh How Happy” and “Five O’clock World”, this is a show
you don’t want to miss.
Some basic groundwork is being
laid for a CODA-sponsored show later in
this year. Nothing is set in concrete as of right now, but your board of directors
and officers are diligently working on this project.
Be
sure to see Vice-president, Ron Miller for great CODA
merchandise. Buy a hat, t-shirt, or mug, etc., and support your
club.
In closing, I need to remind all of you that it
takes money to enable CODA to have picnics,
shows, dances, and other activities. Member dues alone do not cover expenses.
The Cincinnati Oldies & DooWop Association needs your support.
I
have been around since the Club’s existence and have watched many people come
and go throughout. Some people have passed away, some moved out of state, some
are just not satisfied with how the Club has grown and it is sad that change
should be a factor to keep us from enjoying the music, the friends, (old and
new). There are not many places that we can go to and hear the music we love,
outside of our own living room, so these moments should be
cherished. I have watched the CODA Band
grow and get better with time. They do their part to please CODA members. It is part of our motto to “keep the
music alive”. We need to do our part. Thank you.

In 1877 Thomas Edison invents the phonograph for playing
back stored sounds. The first recording he makes is “Mary Had A Little Lamb”. (Who
says we can’t keep the oldies alive?)
In 1915
The Chicago Automatic Machine and Tool Company invents the jukebox
that plays records (as opposed to the cylinder recordings type of player
that has been around since 1889.
I
first met this guy in 1963. I was sitting on a stair
stump near an alley on 15th Street, in “Over the Rhine”, near a bar
called Larry’s, a hot spot with great music. It was about midnight and I
was listening to the band when this guy walks by and
ask “What the hell are you doing out this late?” He walked me about a half a
block to my house telling me I shouldn’t be out alone,
that late. Every time I saw him after
that he would he would smile and say hello. I am very
proud to say that over the years we have become very
good friends and you will never find a more loving person. Danny comes to all
our family functions as we consider him to be just
that, part of our family.
He
is the first paid member of CODA and is still a
member today. He is affectionately known to most of us
as the “Mayor,” as he has done a lot of campaigning for the CODA club. Allow me to introduce Mr. Daniel
Jackson…
I was
born in Newport, Kentucky by a mid-wife and I grew up in Cincinnati’s Findlay
Market area. I attended Webster and Rothenberg schools and later got a GED. I
was a carpenter by trade and still do a little handy-man
work today, whenever someone needs help. I was married 4 times and have 1 daughter that resides in Florida. (He is single now ladies and looking for a love). I like
to fish, spend time with my friends, travel and listening to good music.
Thanks, Danny Jackson

Danny
has been with CODA since the first mention of creating this Club, at Taft Field
House on Colerain Avenue and while everything has not been to his liking I am
proud to say that he never let it deter him and is still a member today.
